President Bola Tinubu has submitted a ₦1.78 trillion Federal Capital Territory (FCT) budget plan to the National Assembly.
In a letter to the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Tinubu called on lawmakers to expedite the approval process to enable vital development projects in the nation’s capital.
The president indicated that the budget presentation was under Section 299 of the Nigerian Constitution, which grants the president the authority to present the FCT’s budget to the legislature.
In his letter, Tinubu stressed that the proposed budget would enhance essential sectors, such as health, social welfare, agriculture, and employment.
Tinubu broke down the allocations, pointing out that 85% of the total FCT budget would be allocated to finishing ongoing infrastructure and development projects, while the remaining 15% would support new initiatives.
“The passage of the budget would facilitate investment in health and social welfare, increase agricultural production, and improve the creation of jobs,” the letter read in part.
He appealed to the parliament to prioritise the approval of the budget proposal, stating, “I urge the National Assembly to give this budget the urgent attention it deserves in the interest of accelerating development within the FCT.”
