Unpacking Marital Power Dynamics in Nigeria

The complexities of marital power dynamics and gender roles were intensely discussed on Friday’s edition of “Jasiri” on News Central TV, featuring guest Ify Mogekwu, Creative Director of Ify’s Kitchen.

The conversation was sparked by an anecdote shared by popular social media personality Sisi Yemmie. The anecdote recounted a situation in which a husband asked his wife to leave their home, citing her “pridefulness.” Ify Mogekwu expressed her disbelief at such instances.

Tolulope Adeleru-Balogun offered a different perspective, suggesting that what some men perceive as pride in their wives might be a reaction to the pressures of managing work and home life.

She highlighted a scenario where a woman returning home after work might inquire about unmet household needs, such as children not being fed, which could be misinterpreted by her husband as being told what to do and therefore labelled as prideful.

Adeleru-Balogun emphasised the importance of investigating such claims before accepting them at face value.

Omotunde Adebowale-David strongly condemned such behaviour as “totally inappropriate,” sharing a personal experience that illustrated the issue. She recounted an incident at Ogba Market where a woman enthusiastically volunteered to be featured in an advertisement.

However, as the woman prepared in her shop, her husband intervened and forbade her from participating, leaving her visibly dejected.

Despite her eagerness, Adebowale-David declined the woman’s subsequent attempt to secretly participate elsewhere, recognising the potential repercussions she might face at home.

Adebowale-David further criticised men who exhibit “ego issues,” particularly when their wives are the primary income earners.

She questioned their inability to offer subtle marital support and instead highlighted instances where men create problems for their wives in their workplaces. She rhetorically asked if any employer would want to import their staff’s domestic issues into their business.

The discussion briefly touched on social media commentary, with Tolulope Adeleru-Balogun alluding to a suggestion that Sisi Yemmie needed her staff’s husband’s consent and should find a way to balance things before the segment concluded.

The overall conversation underscored the delicate balance of power within marriages and the need to critically examine accusations of “pridefulness” against women.
