At least 10 people have died following a fire at a car parts factory in Daejeon, South Korea, with rescue teams still searching for four missing workers, authorities said on Saturday.

Officials said dozens of others were injured in the blaze, including 25 in critical condition, while several sustained less severe injuries.

The fire broke out around 1:00 p.m., with about 170 workers reported to have been inside the facility at the time, according to local reports.

“As of 5 am this morning, we understand that 10 are dead, 25 are seriously injured, and four are still missing,” an official from the interior ministry’s department told AFP.

“We also understand that 34 have been injured but not in a serious condition,” he added.

Authorities said some of the victims were found on upper floors of the building, though rescue efforts have been complicated by structural instability and the risk of further collapse.

Emergency responders also faced additional danger due to the presence of large quantities of sodium in the facility, a substance that can trigger explosions if exposed improperly.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung has directed officials to deploy all available resources to support ongoing rescue and recovery operations.
