At least 11 people were injured in a stabbing incident at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday, which police believe was a random attack.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea confirmed in a press conference that a 42-year-old male suspect is in custody.
Shea stated that the victims were not “predetermined” and that the Michigan resident appeared to act alone, using a “folding knife.” The stabbing spree reportedly began near the checkout area of the store.
According to Munson Healthcare, six of the victims were in critical condition and five in serious condition late Saturday, with at least three undergoing surgery. The injured include six men and five women.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the incident “horrible news” and expressed her thoughts for the victims and the community.
Eyewitness Julia Martell told The New York Times she heard screaming and saw a man with a knife moving through the pharmacy section, “shoving and stabbing people” and leaving “blood everywhere.”
Sheriff Shea noted that such violence is “very uncommon for our area” and credited citizens within the Walmart for assisting in apprehending the suspect.
Traverse City is a well-known tourist destination located on Lake Michigan’s shore.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that agents are providing support to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in their investigation.
