The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed that 11 people were killed and more than 50 houses were destroyed following a communal clash in the Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities in the Nasarawa Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson Ramhan Nansel disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Lafia.

According to him, the violence occurred on Friday morning when suspected hoodlums carried out a reprisal attack over the alleged killing of two of their kinsmen.

“In the course of the attack, 11 people were killed, while about 52 houses were burnt in the two communities,” Nansel said.

The state Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, visited the affected communities to assess the level of destruction and ensure the restoration of normalcy.

During the visit, the police chief expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the affected communities, assuring them that the command would ensure justice was served.

He also ordered an intensive manhunt for those responsible for the attack, and he directed tactical and investigative teams to identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators.

“To prevent any further breakdown of law and order, the Commissioner of Police has also directed the immediate reinforcement and sustained deployment of Police personnel to the affected areas,” he said.

Nansel said the police were collaborating with the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to restore peace and maintain security in the communities.

A stakeholders’ meeting was also held during the visit, where residents were urged to remain calm, obey the law and provide credible information to assist ongoing investigations.

The policeman stated that the affected communities have returned to normalcy, and authorities have strengthened security measures to prevent a recurrence of the violence.
