Fourteen people have died and six others are in critical condition after consuming Moonshine, an illicit alcohol in northern India, authorities reported on Tuesday.
The victims, from five villages in the Amritsar district of Punjab, drank moonshine laced with methanol, a toxic substance often used to increase the potency of homemade liquor. Such alcohol, produced in backstreet distilleries, is responsible for hundreds of deaths annually in India.
The methanol-tainted liquor led to the tragic deaths, and those who survived are now receiving medical treatment. “Fourteen deaths have been confirmed, and six individuals are hospitalised,” said senior police officer Maninder Singh.

The police have arrested nine individuals in connection with the incident. An investigation is ongoing to uncover the full details of the operation and to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his resolve to punish the guilty parties. “The guilty will not be spared,” he vowed.
This latest tragedy follows a similar incident in Tamil Nadu last year, where 53 people died after consuming the same deadly moonshine.
