AI chip giant Nvidia ($10 billion) and tech powerhouse Microsoft ($5 billion) have announced combined investments of up to $15 billion in the AI startup Anthropic, creator of the Claude chatbot.

This huge influx of capital, which reportedly values Anthropic at $350 billion, is part of a broader, frenzied investment spree sweeping the generative AI sector.

The investment secures a key partnership: Anthropic has committed to purchasing $30 billion worth of Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing capacity and will adopt Nvidia’s latest chip technology.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasised that the deal creates a symbiotic relationship where the companies will be both customers and collaborators.

The move intensifies the competition among leading AI firms, specifically Anthropic and its main rival, OpenAI (which is partly owned by Microsoft and recently secured a massive $100 billion infrastructure deal from Nvidia).

The deal further solidifies the position of Nvidia, whose high-performance GPUs are essential for training and running these advanced AI models, as the crucial provider of AI infrastructure.
