The Plateau State government has successfully rescued 16 children who had been trafficked from the Bassa Local Government Area to Anambra State, and has since reunited them with their families.

Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Development, Caroline Dafur, disclosed this in Jos on Saturday, stating that the children, aged between four and nine, were taken from Plateau to Anambra by a suspect who has now been arrested.

Dafur described the operation as a major victory in the fight against child trafficking and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups.

“This rescue represents triumph over trauma, resilience, and the restoration of hope in a world where the innocence of childhood must be protected,” she said.

She urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

“If you see something, say something. Together, we can end child trafficking in Plateau State,” Dafur added.

Receiving the children on behalf of Bassa Local Government, the wife of the council chairman, Miriam Riti, said measures had been put in place to ensure their well-being, including medical examinations, school enrolment, and monitoring by community leaders.

One of the parents, Mrs Asabe Agidi, expressed gratitude to the government, explaining that she had been misled into believing her child was being taken away for a better life.

“I am grateful to have my daughter back, and I will take care of her with the little I have,” she said.

The handover ceremony took place at the J.D. Gomwalk Secretariat in Jos and was attended by the children’s families and community representatives.
