A former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to stay alert ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that every ballot must be protected and warning against any attempt to subvert the process.
In a post shared on his official X( formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Obi called on citizens to remain at their polling units after casting their ballots to observe the counting and transmission of results. He argued that active public participation would be vital to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
According to him, the 2027 elections must mark a departure from past experiences, insisting that votes must truly count.

He cautioned that anyone who fails to ensure the integrity of the process would be regarded as contributing to the country’s decline.
“Let me reiterate: if you do not count our votes, we will count you among those who destroy our democracy, thereby destroying our future, and you must answer to the law,” he said.
He also warned that individuals who attempt to manipulate or obstruct the process would face the full consequences of the law, maintaining that those who undermine the sanctity of the ballot would be held accountable.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier announced that party primaries for candidate nominations would be held between May 22 and June 20, 2026.
The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly polls will take place on March 6, 2027.
