At least 21 people have been killed and eight others injured following an explosion at a firecracker factory in Kakinada, located in India’s southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, according to local officials.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident, saying he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and offering condolences to the victims’ families.
Reports citing the state minister, Kandula Durgesh, indicated that about 30 workers were present at the facility when the blast occurred.Â
He confirmed that 21 people died, while eight others are currently receiving medical treatment.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the explosion.Â
The state’s chief minister, Chandrababu Naidu, described the incident as devastating.
Firecracker production is widespread in India, particularly during celebrations such as Diwali and weddings. However, accidents remain frequent, often linked to poor safety practices and weak enforcement of regulations.
A similar explosion at a fireworks facility in western India last year also claimed 21 lives.
