The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of 44 people following coordinated attacks on several communities in Shanga Local Government Area.
The affected villages include Gebe, Kalkami, Kawara, Kasoshi, Awaye, Tungar Rini, Binuwa, and Dabe.
Bashir Usman, the command’s public relations officer, announced the start of a statewide clearance operation in a statement on Friday.
He explained that the operation followed a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at curbing further banditry and violent crimes across Kebbi State.
The police said extensive deployment of personnel, alongside other security agencies, has been carried out in the affected communities, resulting in the restoration of relative calm.
The command added that investigations into the attacks are ongoing.

According to the police, the clearance operation is targeting high-risk locations, including farmlands, forests, border communities, and remote settlements.
It involves coordinated patrols, intelligence-led stop-and-search operations, and joint missions with other security agencies.
As part of the exercise, two AK-47 rifles were recovered along the Illo-Kamba axis, which authorities described as evidence of the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing.
The Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
He also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, religious organisations, and youth groups to support efforts to restore peace and strengthen security across the state.
