The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced that between 600,000 and 700,000 electricity metres are currently available for distribution across the country.

NERC Vice Chairman Dr Musiliu Oseni disclosed this during his opening address at the 4th NESI Stakeholders Meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, according to a statement posted on the Commission’s X account.

The session also marked his final NESI stakeholders’ meeting in his capacity as vice chairman.

Dr Oseni urged electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to accelerate the rollout and improve public awareness, emphasising that the government has already invested in procuring the metres.

“Utilities must improve publicity. The government has made the investment, so the DisCos need to step up,” he stated.

Speaking to regulators, operators, and stakeholders, Dr Oseni highlighted critical “crossroads” for the sector.

With the ongoing transition to State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, he issued a stern warning to DisCos to cooperate fully with the new state regulators. “No licensee is bigger than their regulator,” he stressed.

He also addressed recent media reports about NERC Commissioners’ tenure, clarifying that the “Staggering Principle” in Section 36 of the Electricity Act applied only to the pioneer Commission. Subsequent chairmen and commissioners serve five-year terms, as outlined in Section 36(1) of the Act.
