Nasarawa Assembly Tells Pension Bureau to Avoid Corruption

Members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly have asked the State Pension Bureau to be honest and open in handling pension and gratuity payment of all pensioners.

Hudu Alhaji, who leads the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, made this statement when the head of the Pension Bureau, Suleiman Nagogo, met with the committee for the 2025 budget review.

Alhaji urged Nagogo and his team to do their jobs properly and make sure no retiree is treated unfairly. He praised Governor Abdullahi Sule for always approving pension payments on time, ensuring retirees are not left waiting.

Alhaji stressed that looking after pensioners is one of his main concerns. He added that the committee will keep a close eye on the bureau’s activities to make sure they’re doing what’s right for the good of the state.

In reply, Nagogo thanked the governor for quickly approving pension and gratuity payments. He said that when Governor Sule took office in 2019, he found that past governments had left unpaid pension debts amounting to ₦42 billion.

Many pensioners had only been receiving half of what they were owed each month under the previous administrations, which caused them a lot of hardship.

To fix this, Governor Sule made a promise during his first term’s swearing-in in 2019. He said that within his first 100 days, he would look into how pensions and gratuities were being paid, to make life better for retired workers.

By June 2024, the governor announced that his government had cleared all gratuity debts owed to retired civil servants, some of which had been unpaid for 26 years.
