Ghana AFCON Call-Up; Partey Excluded Due to an Injury


Ghanaian footballer and defensive midfielder, Thomas Partey, will be out of Ghana’s 2024 AFCON squad due to injury. The Arsenal star right-back will be staying in London to recover from an injury sustained in the 2-2 draw with Fulham at the end of August 2023.

The 30-year-old was signed on October 5, 2020,  to Premier League club Arsenal on a long-term contract, after activating his £45 million (€50 million) release clause with Atlético Madrid. Wearing the number 18 shirt, Partey has been a vital player missing in Mikel Arteta’s matchday squad.

In what seems like his last AFCON tournament, the current captain for the Ghana national team and 34-year-old Dede Ayew gained the AFCON call-up to a surprise to many Ghanaians. André Morgan Rami Ayew, also known as Dede Ayew in Ghana, is a professional footballer who plays as a winger or forward for Ligue 1 club Le Havre.

Fatawu Issahaku has come under backlash from Ghanaians on social media for declining the call-up to play for his national team. The 19-year-old loan agreement at Leicester includes a clause that requires him to meet a threshold of matches to secure a permanent stay with the English side. The AFCON will mean he misses a good number of games, reason he’s opted out of the Ghana squad.
