Nigeria’s U-17 Women’s football team, the Flamingos, encountered a setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Burkina Faso in the first leg of their third-round qualifier for the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Due to inadequate facilities at the originally designated venue in Burkina Faso, the match took place at a neutral ground, the Stade 26 Mars in Bamako, Mali.

The Flamingos took the lead in the 55th minute through a goal by Chidi Harmony. However, Burkina Faso’s Rainata Oubda capitalised on a defensive error late in the game to equalise, securing a draw for her team.

The return leg is scheduled for May 18 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The winner of this leg will advance to the fourth and final round of qualifiers.

Subsequently, the victorious team will face the winner between Senegal and Liberia for an opportunity to compete at the 2024 U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
