Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay has achieved a remarkable third victory at stage 12 of this year’s Tour de France. He made history by becoming the first black African to win a Tour de France stage with his initial victory on stage three on July 1. He further solidified his success by emerging triumphant on stage eight.
In an electrifying finish, 24-year-old Girmay emerged victorious over Belgium’s Wout van Aert in a thrilling 40km sprint in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, solidifying his position as the swiftest sprinter in this year’s race.
With this win, Girmay has widened his lead in the green jersey points battle, now enjoying a commanding 111-point advantage over his closest rival, Jasper Philipsen from Belgium.
“The green jersey gives me wings; I feel super fast. It’s in the head. I’ve had my ups and downs in recent seasons, but I changed things this year, and it’s working,” Girmay said.
The upcoming Stage 13 of the Tour de France will cover a challenging 165.3-kilometre route from Agen to Pau on Friday. This leg of the race will traverse the undulating terrain of the Pyrenees, a mountain range that spans Spain and France.
