All journalists arrested during Thursday’s protest against “censorship” in coverage of demonstrations against a fifth term for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika have been released.

In a statement, Hakim Belouar, spokesman for the Directorate General for National Security (DGSN) told AFP that “no journalists” remained in police custody.

Around 100 journalists joined the demonstration in Central Algiers against reporting restrictions imposed by media bosses. The restrictions prevented both print and broadcast journalists, working for state-owned and private outlets, from covering the demonstrations.
