The UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy has reiterated that Israel must be held accountable for its legal obligations as an occupying power, particularly in the context of the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Speaking at a Foreign Affairs Committee session in Parliament, Lammy described the situation in Gaza as “tremendously horrendous” and emphasized Israel’s duty to comply with international law as an occupying power.
He stressed that the international community is clear about Israel’s responsibilities under international law and that Israel must be held accountable. “I expect, as a democratic nation, Israel has to keep in mind its obligations under international law,” Lammy stated.
In response to questions about the controversial remarks made by Israeli officials regarding the potential annexation of the West Bank, Lammy expressed Britain’s opposition, stating, “I will do all I can to ensure that does not occur.” He reaffirmed Britain’s stance for a two-state solution and warned that illegal annexation must not be allowed to take place.
This statement comes amid rising international scrutiny of Israel’s actions, particularly after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
