Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has established two commissions to support the state’s efforts in tackling climate change and promoting a green economy.
These initiatives are in line with the Climate Change and Green Economy Commission Law.
Mr Nsa Gill, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, announced the creation of the State Council on Climate Change and the State Green Economy Commission in a statement. He explained that the commissions are statutory bodies tasked with providing strategic leadership, implementing policies, and fostering collaborations across various sectors to achieve the state’s environmental goals.
The Climate Change Council, chaired by Governor Otu, includes nine members, with Deputy Governor Dr Peter Odey serving as Vice Chairman.
Other members include the Commissioner for Environment, the Chairman of the Green Economy Commission, Mr Emmanuel Etim, and notable experts like Mr Adam Nkanor, Ms Veronica Jakarasi, Mr Joseph Onoja, and Dr Edu Effiom, who will act as the Director General of the council.
The Green Economy Commission, led by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr Oden Ewa, also comprises nine members.
Among them are Mr Xavier Eyamba, Mr Peter Ohiero, Mr Justin Andoh Eleshi, Mr Ekpor Erekoro, Mr Austin Eremi, and Mr Stephen Eguba Ekwok. Legal practitioner and climate advocate Mr William Itorok will also serve on the commission, with Mr Edwin Usang appointed as secretary.
Gill stated that the commissions would work closely with development partners and stakeholders to address climate change challenges, enhance green economic growth, and carry out other assigned responsibilities.
