Military Pensioners Protest Unpaid Dues at Nigeria’s Finance Ministry

A group of retired Nigerian military personnel protested at the entrance of the Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Tuesday regarding unpaid entitlements.

They set up canopies and chairs to block the entrance and displayed placards that called for the immediate payment of their outstanding benefits.

This protest follows a previous demonstration in December, during which the retirees shut down the ministry due to the government’s failure to meet their claims.

The group requests the disbursal of various long-overdue benefits, including palliatives, from October 2023 to November 2024.

Additionally, they are asking for an increase of N32,000 in their pensions, a lump sum payment of the security debarment allowance, and a refund for pensions deducted from the salaries of medically discharged soldiers.

After the retirees’ protest in December, the government paid 50 per cent of the outstanding entitlements and promised that the remaining balance would be paid.

The retirees claimed that the government has yet to fulfil its commitment.
