French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed on Friday that Russia is the aggressor in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, following a public confrontation between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Speaking during a state visit to Portugal, Macron told journalists, “There is an aggressor, and that is Russia. There is an aggrieved people, and that is Ukraine.”

He further emphasised the international support for Ukraine, stating, “I think we were all right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago and to continue to do so. And when I saw we, I mean the United States of America, Europeans, Canadians, Japanese, and many others.”
The statement came after a tense exchange between Trump and Zelensky in the Oval Office.
During the meeting, Trump raised his voice, warning Zelensky that US support for Ukraine could be withdrawn unless Ukraine made concessions to Russia.
