Egypt has put forward a bold $53 billion proposal to rebuild Gaza over the next five years, focusing on emergency aid, infrastructure repairs, and long-term economic recovery.

The plan, scheduled to be discussed at an Arab summit in Cairo, challenges a recent proposal from former US President Donald Trump, which suggested taking control of Gaza and relocating its residents—a move widely condemned by Palestinians and Arab nations.

The initial recovery phase, expected to last six months and cost $3 billion, aims to clear debris, remove unexploded bombs, and provide temporary housing.

Egypt suggests setting up seven housing sites within Gaza to shelter 1.5 million displaced people. Additionally, repairs to 60,000 damaged homes would accommodate 360,000 people.

The reconstruction phase is divided into two stages. The first, running until 2027 with a $20 billion budget, focuses on rebuilding key infrastructure, roads, and utilities. It also includes constructing 200,000 permanent homes and reclaiming 20,000 acres of land.

The second stage, estimated at $30 billion and extending to 2030, would complete infrastructure projects and establish industrial zones, ports, and an airport.

Egypt proposes an internationally supervised trust fund to ensure transparency. A temporary Gaza administration, made up of independent experts, would oversee governance for six months before transitioning to the Palestinian Authority.

Meanwhile, Egypt and Jordan are training Palestinian security forces, with discussions ongoing about an international peacekeeping presence.

This ambitious plan aims to pave the way for Palestinian statehood and long-term stability in the region.
