On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vehemently condemned Donald Trump’s “dumb” tariffs and charged that the US president was attempting to bring Canada’s economy to a complete collapse so that Canada might acquire its northern neighbour.
The US president fulfilled his promise to apply 25% tariffs on all Canadian exports, prompting the unusual warning about Trump’s threat to Canadian sovereignty.
Canada retaliated right away, sparking a trade war between once-close friends and endangering future cross-border trade that typically generates billions of dollars every day.
Trudeau spoke directly to Trump during a heated speech in the Canadian capital, stating that although he believes Trump is a “smart guy,” the tariffs are a “very dumb thing to do.”
According to Trump, the actions are required to compel Canada to take action against the flow of fentanyl and unauthorised migrants across the border.
On Tuesday, Trudeau referred to Trump’s fentanyl defence as “completely false.” Trudeau has insisted that Canada does not significantly contribute to either issue in the United States.
When asked why he imposed tariffs, Trudeau responded that Trump, who has frequently advocated for Canada to become the 51st state to join the US, “wants to see a collapse of the Canadian economy because that would make it easier to annex us.”
“The United States launched a trade war against Canada,” Trudeau stated.
Canadians have common sense. Our manners are courteous. We won’t back down in a conflict.”
Trudeau stated that Canada will file dispute cases at the World Trade Organisation and through the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade pact, which was negotiated during Trump’s first term, in reaction to the US tariffs.
“Until the US levies are lifted, Canada’s retaliatory tariffs will stay in effect,” he said.
“We don’t want this,” Trudeau declared.
Speaking directly to the American people, Trudeau warned that a trade war with Canada would cause economic hardship in the US, saying, “Your government has chosen to do this to you.”
– ‘Appeasing Putin’ –
Sunday will see the appointment of a new leader for the ruling Liberal Party, replacing Trudeau, who has held the position since 2015.
When the new head of the party is chosen, he has stated that he will resign as prime minister.
To get around the tariffs that went into effect on Tuesday, Canada has attempted to allay Trump’s worries about fentanyl and migrants.
A fentanyl czar has been appointed to spearhead Canada’s fight against the narcotic, and the country has pushed through an expensive new border security strategy.
According to Trudeau, he is still focused on getting US tariffs removed “as quickly as possible,” and he is still prepared to speak with Trump directly.
While the United States was waging an economic war on its “closest ally,” the Canadian leader said at the beginning of his speech that Trump was “talking about working positively with Russia (and) appeasing Vladimir Putin.”
Following the stunning Oval Office fight between Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky last week, Trudeau and other Canadian leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine.
