This rescue comes during ongoing concerns over migrant safety in the Mediterranean, with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reporting that 247 people have already disappeared or died in 2025 while attempting to reach Europe.

In 2024, the total number of deaths reached 2,360, the majority of which occurred in the central Mediterranean, known for being one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.
