Architect Yasmeen Lari Rejects $100,000 Israeli Prize Over Gaza War

Prominent Pakistani architect Yasmeen Lari has refused to accept this year’s Wolf Prize, a prestigious award granted by the Israel-based Wolf Foundation, in protest against Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.

Lari, widely recognised for her humanitarian work and sustainable architecture, conveyed her decision in a letter to the foundation. She expressed gratitude for the honour but stated that she could not accept the award “in view of the unfortunate continuing genocide in Gaza.”

The Wolf Foundation announced its prize winners on March 10, with Lari being among the recipients. However, just a day later, she declined both the accolade and the accompanying $100,000 prize money.

In her letter, Lari emphasised her lifelong commitment to aiding displaced communities, particularly climate refugees, and lamented the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. She stressed that she opposes all forms of violence, regardless of the conflict’s sides, and could not, in good conscience, accept recognition from an Israeli institution during the ongoing devastation.

While the Wolf Foundation operates independently of the Israeli government, Lari’s decision aligns with global protests and boycotts against Israel’s actions in Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians have been killed or displaced.
