At least two people were killed and seven others wounded in an attack on the Abu Shouk refugee camp in Sudan’s North Darfur state, a medical source told AFP on Monday, blaming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The attack, which took place near the state capital, El-Fasher, was accompanied by “intense bombardments” and sightings of explosive drones over the city, according to a local volunteer aid group.
The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, has been engaged in a brutal conflict with Sudan’s military under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan since April 2023. The ongoing war has triggered what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst hunger and displacement crisis, with over 12 million people forced to flee their homes and tens of thousands killed.
Although the Sudanese army recently reclaimed the capital, Khartoum, the country remains split between rival factions. The military controls the east and north, while the RSF dominates much of Darfur in the west and parts of the south.
El-Fasher remains the only state capital in Darfur still under government control, despite months of RSF siege. Meanwhile, in South Kordofan, the RSF claimed on Monday to have killed scores of soldiers and driven the army out of the Khor al-Daleb region. The area is near territories controlled by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, which has allied itself with the RSF.
