US Man Charged Over Online Threats to Assassinate Trump

A man from Pennsylvania has been charged with threatening to assassinate US President Donald Trump and other government officials, the Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed on Friday.

Shawn Monper, 32, who reportedly posted under the alias “Mr Satan,” faces federal charges for making threats to assault and kill Trump, as well as officials from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to the DOJ, the FBI launched an investigation after receiving an emergency alert regarding a series of violent threats made via YouTube. The online posts, traced to an account named “Mr Satan,” were linked to Monper’s home in Butler Township, Pennsylvania — the same town where Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt in July 2024.

The DOJ said Monper had obtained a firearms permit shortly after Trump’s inauguration in January and had made several concerning comments online. “I bought several guns and been stocking up on ammo since Trump got in office,” Monper allegedly posted.

On 17 February, Monper is said to have written: “Nah, we just need to start killing people — Trump, Elon, all the heads of agencies Trump appointed, and anyone who stands in the way.” He referred to billionaire advisor Elon Musk, who has been a prominent Trump ally.

He went on to claim, “We are the majority, MAGA is a minority… by the time it’s time to make the move, they will be weakened… American Revolution 2.0.”

The situation escalated further on 4 March, when Monper reportedly uploaded a video titled “Live: Trump’s address to Congress,” in which he stated his intention to carry out the assassination himself.

His remarks have raised significant alarm, especially given the chilling coincidence of his location. Butler Township was the site of the July 13 shooting during a Trump campaign rally, where a gunman nearly killed the president, grazing his ear with a bullet and leaving one person dead and three others wounded.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a stern statement following the arrest. “Rest assured that whenever and wherever threats of assassination or mass violence occur, this Department of Justice will find, arrest, and prosecute the suspect to the fullest extent of the law,” she said, vowing to seek the “maximum appropriate punishment.”

Monper is due to appear in court for a detention hearing on 14 April.
