The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, joined leaders across the world in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed at the age of 88. He called him “a messenger of hope, humility, and humanity.”

Guterres said that Pope Francis was a powerful voice for peace, human rights, and fairness. He leaves behind a strong legacy of faith, kindness, and service—especially towards the poor, the vulnerable, and those affected by war and conflict.

He added that Pope Francis was a spiritual leader not just for Catholics, but for people of all faiths and beliefs. He worked with others to promote peace and build a better future for everyone.

Guterres also remembered how the Pope inspired the United Nations through his deep commitment to its values and goals. He mentioned their past meetings, and especially Pope Francis’s visit to the UN Headquarters in 2015, where he spoke about the idea of a “united human family.”

The UN chief praised Pope Francis’s strong message about caring for the planet. His letter to the world—Laudato Si—was an important influence on global efforts to tackle climate change, including the Paris Agreement.

Pope Francis once said: “The future of humankind isn’t only in the hands of politicians, leaders, or big companies. It’s in the hands of those who see others as people like themselves—as part of ‘us’.”

Guterres said the world would be a kinder, more peaceful place if more people followed Pope Francis’s example of unity and understanding.

He ended his message by offering heartfelt sympathy to Catholics and to everyone around the world who was touched by the life and teachings of Pope Francis.
