The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has made a renewed and urgent plea for a ceasefire in Gaza following the deaths of two of its staff members in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Yunis.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 25, 2025, via social media, the humanitarian organisation expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Ibrahim Eid and Ahmad Abu Hilal, who were killed on Saturday when an Israeli airstrike hit their home.
“We are devastated by the deaths of two of our cherished colleagues,” said the ICRC.
While the statement did not explicitly state who carried out the attack, the Israeli military has confirmed conducting operations in Khan Yunis on the same day.
Eid served as a weapons contamination officer, while Hilal was a Red Cross-run medical facility security guard.
“Their deaths are another tragic reminder of the staggering toll the conflict is taking on civilians in Gaza,” the statement continued.
The ICRC reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire and appealed for all parties to respect and protect non-combatants, including healthcare workers, humanitarian staff, and civil defence teams.
Israel resumed its military bombardment in Gaza after breaking a temporary truce in March. The Israeli airstrikes have intensified since May 17, after Israel agreed to let in some humanitarian aid after two months of total blockade.
