US-German National Charged Over Alleged Firebomb Plot at Tel Aviv Mission

An American-German, Joseph Neumeyer, has been charged in New York for allegedly attempting to firebomb the United States diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv earlier this week, according to the US Department of Justice.

The 28-year-old was apprehended in Israel following the alleged incident and deported to the US, where he was taken into custody upon arrival, court filings and an official statement confirmed.

Neumeyer also faces charges over threats made against former US President Donald Trump.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi vowed to pursue the matter rigorously, stating that her office intends to “prosecute this defendant to the fullest extent of the law.”

If found guilty, Neumeyer could receive a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The Department of Justice said Neumeyer had travelled to Israel in April. On 19 May, he reportedly made a Facebook post calling on others to “join me as I burn down the embassy.” He also wrote inflammatory anti-American messages and profanity-laden remarks against the West.

According to prosecutors, Neumeyer then approached the US diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv—functioning as an outpost of the main US Embassy in Jerusalem—where he spat on a security guard. When the guard attempted to detain him, Neumeyer fled, leaving behind his backpack.

Law enforcement discovered that the bag contained several improvised incendiary devices, known as Molotov cocktails, filled with a flammable substance.

Authorities tracked Neumeyer to his hotel later that day and arrested him. Following his deportation to New York on Saturday, Neumeyer appeared before a federal judge in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon and was ordered to remain in custody pending further legal proceedings.

US officials also drew attention to several threatening messages Neumeyer is believed to have posted on social media.

“This individual is accused of plotting a dangerous attack against our embassy in Israel, and issuing threats against Americans and former President Trump,” said Attorney General Bondi. “Such vile and violent actions will not be tolerated, whether at home or abroad.”

FBI Director Kash Patel also condemned the alleged plot, calling it “despicable behaviour.”

The incident came just two days before another violent episode in the United States, in which a gunman fatally shot two Israeli embassy staffers outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C. That attack is suspected to be linked to growing tensions over Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza.
