Germany to Continue Israel Weapons Sales, Cites Historic Responsibility

Germany has stated it will continue supplying weapons to Israel, despite growing calls—particularly from Spain—for an arms embargo in response to Israel’s intensifying military bombardment in Gaza.

Speaking during a joint press conference in Madrid with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Berlin’s unwavering support for Israel’s security.

“As a country whose very identity includes a responsibility for Israel’s safety due to our historical legacy, we remain committed to helping Israel protect itself,” said Wadephul. “That naturally includes future arms deliveries.”

His comments came after Spain urged fellow European Union members to stop selling weapons to Israel and to suspend the EU-Israel association agreement. Albares reiterated the call on Sunday while hosting 20 European and Arab nations to explore ways to end the Gaza conflict.

While backing Israel, Wadephul also expressed concern for the Palestinian population, warning against forced displacement and the use of starvation as a tactic. He stressed the need for sustained humanitarian aid into the war-torn Gaza Strip.

Albares condemned Israel’s ongoing offensive, arguing it serves “no military purpose” other than to “turn Gaza into a vast cemetery.” He demanded unhindered humanitarian access after months of Israeli-imposed restrictions.

The recent Israeli onslaught began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched anattack on Israel, killing 1,218 people—mostly civilians—and taking 251 hostages. According to Israeli authorities, 57 of those hostages remain in Gaza, including 34 who are presumed dead.

Israel’s subsequent military invasion and airstrikes have left an estimated 54,000 dead in Gaza, the majority women and children, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
