Manchester United Sign Brazil’s Matheus Cunha from Wolves in £62.5m Deal

Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal reportedly worth £62.5 million.

The 26-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the club holding the option to extend it by a further year.

United confirmed the transfer on Sunday, stating, “Manchester United have reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”

The move, which is pending visa approval and registration, marks the first signing under new manager Ruben Amorim. Cunha was in Manchester over the weekend to finalise the terms of the transfer.

The Brazilian international had an impressive season with Wolves, netting 18 goals across all competitions and earning the club’s Player of the Year accolade. Since he arrived from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, Cunha has scored 33 times in 92 appearances.

Wolves confirmed the transfer was for a club-record fee and thanked Cunha for his contributions. United triggered the release clause in his contract to complete the deal.

Cunha is now set to link up with the Brazilian national team ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, which will also mark Carlo Ancelotti’s debut as Brazil manager.

The signing comes after a disappointing campaign for Wolves, who finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. Their final league position was their worst since the 1973–74 season.

United’s attacking shortcomings were exposed once again during their own Europa League final defeat to Spurs, prompting a need for greater firepower up front. Cunha is expected to bring both sharp finishing and creative flair to bolster the forward line.

With financial fair play restrictions in place and no Champions League football next season, Amorim has acknowledged that United’s transfer activity will be relatively restrained.

However, he emphasised the importance of developing existing talent and enhancing the club’s academy during the team’s recent post-season tour of Asia.

“Of course, we’ll bring in some new players,” Amorim said. “But the main goal is to improve what we already have and build for the future.”

Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford as United continue to reshape their squad.
