A 38-year-old Palestinian journalist who has worked for AFP and other news outlets, Mohammed Awad, has been arrested by Israeli authorities.
Awad’s arrest is the latest detention of a journalist in the occupied West Bank.
His wife, Iman Shalash, said he was taken from their home near Ramallah at about 6 a.m on Wednesday.
When contacted multiple times by AFP for comment on the reasons for Awad’s arrest, the Israeli military did not immediately respond. Awad could not be reached.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, a non-governmental organisation that advocates for detained Palestinians, said Awad’s detention brings to 40 the number of Palestinian journalists held by Israel, which has occupied the West Bank since 1967.
The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate described Awad’s arrest as “an extension of the occupation’s systematic policy of targeting Palestinian journalists.”
It said the arrest was part of “a continuous attempt to silence the voice of the press and obstruct the transmission of the truth.”
