Iran’s Top Diplomat to Meet UN Nuclear Chief in Cairo

Iran’s top diplomat and chief nuclear negotiator, Abbas Araghchi, will meet with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi and Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in Cairo on Monday, Egypt’s foreign ministry confirmed.

The tripartite meeting comes just a day after a leaked report from the UN nuclear watchdog revealed that Iran has ramped up its enrichment of uranium to 60% purity — a level approaching the 90% required for nuclear weapons.

This development coincides with ongoing discussions between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme, years after Washington unilaterally exited the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — a landmark accord aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Western nations have long accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons capabilities, an allegation Tehran continues to deny.

According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, Araghchi is also scheduled to meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during his Cairo visit.

Speaking on Saturday, Araghchi revealed he had received “elements” of a U.S. proposal for a potential nuclear deal after five rounds of talks mediated by Oman.

In a phone conversation with Grossi on Sunday, Araghchi cautioned against new European sanctions and urged the IAEA to prevent “parties from exploiting” its report “to advance their political objectives.”

The IAEA’s board of governors is expected to assess Iran’s nuclear activities at its next quarterly meeting in Vienna, which begins on June 9.
