Governor Ademola Adeleke has won the Osun State governorship election on the Accord Party platform, securing another term in office after a closely contested race against the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adeleke, who contested for re-election under the Accord Party, emerged ahead of his main rival after results were collated from the state’s 30 local government areas.
The election, held on Saturday, saw Adeleke and the APC candidate dominate the results announced across the state.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began collating and announcing results shortly after voting ended, with Adeleke taking an early lead in several local government areas.
The Accord candidate secured notable victories in areas including Ede South, Ede North, Osogbo, Ife East, Ife Central, Iwo, Egbedore and Aiyedaade, while the APC won several other local government areas.
The contest was also marked by reports of cancelled polling units, overvoting, violence and ballot snatching in some areas.
In Orolu, voting was cancelled in two polling units following reported overvoting and violence, while a polling unit in Aiyedaade was also cancelled over overvoting.
INEC had earlier added SDP candidate Francis Olugbenga Ajala and his running mate, Faseke Babajimi Oladipo, to the ballot following a Nigerian High Court judgment, bringing the number of parties contesting the election to 15.
The commission also reproduced ballot papers and result sheets to reflect the addition.
As collation progressed, Adeleke urged security agencies to protect the electoral process and prevent attempts to disrupt collation centres.
He had also called on President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to ensure that voters’ mandates were protected and that the final result reflected the people’s choice.
INEC’s final declaration confirms Adeleke’s victory, giving the Accord Party control of the Osun State Government House.
