Gaza Food Crisis Threatens Newborn Lives – UN

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported malnutrition, especially among pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, in Gaza.

The United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency (UNFPA) warns of “catastrophic birth outcomes” in Gaza as a result of “starvation, psychological trauma, and collapsing healthcare.”

The UNFPA warns that the conditions are “threatening the survival of an entire generation.”

According to the agency’s data from the first half of 2025, births sharply declined.

The data shows that there were about 29,000 births in the first half of 2022. However, in 2025, there have been 17,000 births.

Reports also indicate that 220 mothers died from January to June, which is “more than 20 times” the total number of maternal deaths recorded in 2022.

On Tuesday, there were only 950 trucks worth of aid waiting in Gaza for international organizations to pick up and distribute. Israeli authorities control all the border crossings in Gaza.

One of the victims of Israel’s military actions says it costs about 600 shekels (N275,000) daily for just a plate of lentils and a loaf of bread in Gaza.

Israel’s ground and air operations continue, with Gaza’s Civil Defence agency reporting 17 people killed by airstrikes on Wednesday.
