The human rights situation in Haiti is “extremely worrying,” according to Farhan Haq, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, as the country continues to be gripped by widespread gang violence.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Haq revealed that between April and June, at least 1,520 people were killed and 609 injured as a result of armed violence.
He also noted that during the same period, “at least 185 kidnappings and 628 victims of sexual violence were reported.”
” Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) urges immediate support to sustain and expand our overall response to protect the most vulnerable,” Haq said.
Between October 2024 and June 2025, more than 4,800 people were killed in gang-related violence across Haiti, according to the United Nations. Hundreds of others have suffered injuries or have been kidnapped, raped, or trafficked. In recent years, gang violence has also forced more than 1.3 million people from their homes.
Haiti has not held general elections for nearly a decade. Its last president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated at his private residence in July 2021. Since his death, the country has witnessed a sharp escalation in gang violence.
