The Singaporean government announced on Thursday that it has given Meta Platforms until the end of this month to introduce new measures, including facial recognition, to help curb impersonation scams on Facebook.

Meta will face a fine of up to S$1 million (£600,000) if it fails to comply “without reasonable excuse,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement. The ministry added that non-compliance beyond the deadline would incur further fines of up to S$100,000 for each additional day, according to Reuters.

The ministry issued the directive to Meta on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Singapore’s police instructed Meta to introduce anti-scam measures targeting advertisements, accounts, profiles, and business pages that impersonate senior government officials on its platform. That order did not include a deadline.

Authorities reported a rise in scammers exploiting Facebook for impersonation scams between June 2024 and June 2025. These scams used videos and images of government officials in fake adverts, accounts, profiles, and business pages.

“While Meta has taken steps to reduce impersonation scams worldwide, including in Singapore, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Singapore Police Force remain concerned about their continued prevalence,” the ministry stated.

This is the first directive issued under Singapore’s new Online Criminal Harms Act, which came into force in February 2024.
