Russia launched a “massive” overnight assault against Ukraine with drones and missiles on Sunday, wounding at least nine people across the country, according to Ukrainian officials.
Air raid alerts were active in the Kyiv region, with the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reporting five people hospitalised in the capital. The governor of the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region reported at least four injuries there.
Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential office, condemned the attacks as a “war against civilians” and called for stronger economic sanctions from the West against Russia.

In response to the Russian strikes near its border, Poland scrambled fighter jets and put its ground-based air defence systems on high alert as a precautionary measure to secure its airspace and protect citizens.
This move comes amid recent accusations by several European nations that Russia has violated their airspace.
Separately, both Kyiv and Moscow confirmed on Saturday that the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, has been off the grid for four days, reigniting fears of a potential nuclear incident.
