Spain forward Dani Olmo has been ruled out of the European champions’ upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) confirmed on Friday.
Olmo, who plays for Barcelona, trained on Friday in a bid to be cleared for Saturday’s match against Georgia, but tests revealed a muscle injury in his left leg.
The RFEF said he would return to Barcelona while the rest of Luis de la Fuente’s squad travels to Elche to continue their qualification campaign.
Spain can secure a spot at next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada with consecutive wins in this international window, depending on other results in Group E.
Despite being considered strong contenders for a second World Cup crown, coach De la Fuente urged his players to focus on the immediate task of qualification.
“I’m not worried about anything. First, let’s qualify. And then we’ll think about it (winning the World Cup),” he said. “We have to take the drama out of defeats and results. Being a champion is very difficult.”
Spain currently lead their qualifying group by three points over Georgia and Turkey, following commanding opening wins of 6-0 against Turkey and 3-0 against Bulgaria last month.
