The United States on Tuesday urged all parties in Madagascar to seek a peaceful resolution that upholds the country’s constitution following a military takeover.

A State Department spokesperson said, “We urge all parties to pursue a peaceful solution in-line with the constitutional order,” in response to the CAPSAT unit’s announcement that it had assumed control of the Indian Ocean nation.

The takeover followed the impeachment of President Andry Rajoelina by the national assembly and comes amid weeks of anti-government protests sparked by electricity and water shortages.

Under US law, assistance is generally suspended to countries experiencing military coups. Despite this, President Donald Trump’s administration has already reduced foreign aid broadly. In the fiscal year ending last month, the United States provided approximately $32 million to Madagascar, primarily directed toward health initiatives.
