The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 13 new cases of Lassa fever in its latest report covering September 29 to  October 5, 2025 (Week 40).

According to the update shared on the Centre’s official X handle, the new infections were recorded in Ondo and Edo States, two of the most affected regions this year.

Nigeria has now documented 924 confirmed cases and 172 deaths across 21 states and 106 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 2025, with the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) rising to 18.6%, compared to 17.0% in the same period last year.

The NCDC also reported 117 new suspected cases, bringing the year’s cumulative total to 8,041 suspected infections.

13 New Lassa Fever Cases in Ondo, Edo States

Over 90% of confirmed cases have come from Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi States, which remain the outbreak’s epicentres.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening surveillance, laboratory testing, risk communication, and infection prevention measures nationwide.

It urged Nigerians to maintain clean environments, store food properly, and avoid contact with rodents, while advising anyone with symptoms such as persistent fever, sore throat, or chest pain to seek prompt medical care.

The NCDC added that it continues to work closely with state health ministries, development partners, and community stakeholders to ensure effective containment and treatment of Lassa fever cases.
