Lagos State has been selected to host the 2026 edition of the Africa Road Running Race, marking another milestone in Nigeria’s growing reputation as a hub for international sporting events.

The announcement was made by the organisers of the continental race in collaboration with the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), confirming that Lagos will welcome elite athletes, coaches, and sporting delegations from across Africa.

The event, scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2026, is expected to attract thousands of participants and spectators, generating both sporting and economic benefits for the state.

“This is a proud moment for Lagos and for Nigeria as a whole. We are ready to showcase our hospitality and demonstrate our ability to host top-tier international competitions,” the governor said.

Officials from the Lagos State Sports Commission also noted that the race aligns with the administration’s broader vision of promoting healthy living, youth empowerment, and tourism through sports.

The commission revealed that local athletes will be given the opportunity to compete alongside continental champions, helping to raise the standard of distance running in Nigeria.

The Africa Road Running Race is one of the continent’s most prestigious long-distance events, featuring categories for professionals, amateurs, and community runners.

It has been previously hosted by countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

Sports enthusiasts say Lagos’ hosting rights will not only boost Nigeria’s sporting profile but also provide a platform to inspire young athletes and promote a culture of fitness across the country.
