The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday firmly addressed his inclusion on the witness list for the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Wike stated that he would not volunteer testimony based merely on media reports, clarifying, “I won’t start panicking just because I saw my name listed. But if I am formally summoned to testify or provide evidence, I will obey the court.”

Speaking at a media chat in Abuja, Wike stressed that no court order or legal notice has been served on him requiring his appearance. He insisted that he would respect the legal process only if formally subpoenaed.

When questioned about why Kanu included his name among the potential witnesses, Wike declined to speculate, noting that only the IPOB leader could explain the reason.

“If you see Nnamdi Kanu, ask him why he listed me. I didn’t volunteer to be a witness,” he said.

Wike also refused to comment on the question of whether Kanu’s prolonged detention on terrorism charges should be resolved through a political solution.

Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his extradition in June 2021. Wike is listed among several high-profile individuals named by the IPOB leader’s defence team as “compellable witnesses.”
