The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Dr Kingsley Ude, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) representing Enugu State, as a minister.

His confirmation followed a screening session held on the Senate floor on Thursday.

Born in 1978, Ude previously served as Enugu State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

During his screening, senators questioned him on a range of national and international issues.

Senator Abdul Ningi asked the nominee to share his opinion on the ongoing “Trump threat” and possible diplomatic solutions.

The question briefly caused an uproar among lawmakers, with some arguing that Ude had already proven his competence and should not face further interrogation.

In his response, Ude commended President Bola Tinubu for managing the matter diplomatically, noting that it was an issue better handled through diplomacy than legal intervention.

Another senator, Adamu Aliero, sought Ude’s opinion on whether the offices of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice should be separated.

Ude replied that the effectiveness of either arrangement depends largely on the integrity and independence of the officeholder and whether they allow political interference.

Satisfied with his responses, the Senate asked him to take a bow and leave, after which his appointment was unanimously confirmed.

Ude’s confirmation comes a few weeks after the resignation of Uche Nnaji, the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, who left President Tinubu’s cabinet following a certificate scandal.
