Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the coalition-backed party he is expected to align with as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Atiku announced his defection on Monday via his X handle, where he shared a photograph of himself holding his ADC membership card, accompanied by the brief caption, “It’s official.”

His decision comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, following a prolonged period of internal strife within the party.
By joining the ADC, Atiku has now cemented his alignment with the coalition platform he publicly endorsed in July as a united front for leading opposition figures — including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal — to mount a strong challenge against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Until now, Atiku and several opposition leaders had held off on formally registering with the ADC.
The opposition coalition had earlier unveiled the ADC as its vehicle for the 2027 elections, naming former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi as National Publicity Secretary.
