The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has denied authorising or sanctioning the attack on veteran filmmaker and media executive Don Pedro Obaseki, following public outrage over a viral video showing his assault and public humiliation in Benin City.
The Benin Traditional Council said in a statement signed by Frank Irabor on Wednesday that the incident in which Don Pedro was stripped, beaten, and paraded through the streets was not sanctioned by the palace and did not represent the monarch’s personality.
“The unfortunate incident in which Pedro Obaseki was manhandled was not authorised by the Oba of Benin. And it cannot be authorised because it is not in the character of our revered monarch to do so,” the monarch said, describing the Oba as “a peace-loving father to all.”
The monarch urged youths to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, regardless of provocation, and advised that the appropriate security agencies handle grievances.
“The Benin Traditional Council also wishes to advise our youth not to take the laws into their hands on any issue, no matter the degree of provocation,” it added.

“They should always respect the laws of the land in all actions and utterances and allow appropriate security agencies to handle all matters.
“Social media users should equally endeavour to cross-check information appropriately before posting. His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin, wishes you all a happy new year.”
The incident occurred on Sunday, December 28, 2025, after Don Pedro was accused by a group of youths of making disrespectful remarks about the Benin throne during a meet-and-greet session in London. He was later taken to the palace following the assault.
Obaseki has since petitioned the State Security Service (SSS), alleging abduction and assault.
Meanwhile, the Obaseki family has condemned the attack as barbaric, shameful and a gross violation of fundamental human rights and expressed support for Obaseki’s decision to seek legal redress.
