Global policy analyst Yemi Fajemisin has warned that the United States’ capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro could have serious long-term geopolitical consequences, sowing distrust and potentially driving nations toward nuclear ambitions.
Fajemisin made the remarks on Saturday in an interview with News Central TV.
Speaking on the US operation that resulted in Maduro’s capture, Fajemisin said, “But to cross the line of actually picking a head of state like this, I think, is going to open a Pandora’s box. We’re going to be seeing states maybe even dash towards nuclear weapons. We’re going to be seeing nations being cautious in negotiations between the Western world and the rest of the world, especially along the Middle East and Latin America now.”
He warned that the move could undermine trust in the United States in international negotiations.
“So it’s a bit of a dicey situation going forward in terms of negotiation. It’s going to be sowing the seeds of distrust, not trusting America as a whole.”

Fajemisin also explained the potential security repercussions, particularly for nations like Iran.
“We also need to remember that it is activities like this that make states like Iran always want nuclear weapons. So you’re going to be having some despotic states thinking about securing themselves in future, maybe making moves to, at all costs, acquire nuclear weapons to deter the US from doing things like this to them.”
While acknowledging the repressive nature of Maduro’s regime, Fajemisin urged caution in unilateral interventions.
“I mean, we can decide, we can agree that the Maduro regime, it’s a brutal one, a repressive one, we can agree that the election Maduro conducted in 2024 wasn’t a credible one, but we have to be very careful when it comes to powerful states like the US just suddenly going into another sovereign state.”
