Nigeria’s electricity grid suffered another system failure on Friday, triggering widespread blackouts across several parts of the country and cutting power to millions of households and businesses.
Data obtained showed that total power generation crashed from above 4,500 megawatts to just 24 megawatts around 1:30 pm.
The outage affected all 23 generation plants linked to the national grid, with each recording a total loss of output. As a result, none of the country’s 11 electricity distribution companies received power allocation during the period.

At the time of filing this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria had not disclosed the cause of the failure or issued a comprehensive statement on the incident.
The disruption is the first grid collapse recorded in 2026 and follows a similar nationwide outage on December 29, 2025.
Previous system failures have been blamed on a mix of technical malfunctions, weak transmission infrastructure, poor maintenance, and instability in power generation, according to industry sources.
