Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has accused US President Donald Trump of attempting to create “a new UN” with his proposed global peace initiative, the “Board of Peace.”

Speaking on Friday, Lula said Trump’s plan undermines the authority of existing international institutions.

He reportedly remarked, “Instead of fixing the United Nations, what’s happening? President Trump is proposing to create a new UN where only he is the owner.”

The initiative was unveiled by Trump on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Leaders and officials from 19 countries signed their founding charter, which requires a $1 billion membership fee and places Trump as the chairman.

While initially intended to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction, the charter appears to have a broader global mandate, raising questions among world powers.

Lula’s comments followed a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who reportedly urged the Brazilian leader to safeguard “the central role” of the United Nations.

Key US allies have expressed doubts about the board. France said the charter, in its current form, is “incompatible” with its international commitments, particularly UN membership obligations. The UK has opposed the inclusion of Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Lulu’s remarks come with growing international scrutiny over Trump’s efforts to establish an alternative global conflict-resolution body.
